IDW Implementation in Map Calculus and Commercial GIS Products

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the development of spatial analysis functions in Map Calculus by comparing the implementation of the IDW (Inverse Distance Weighting) interpolation method between Map Calculus and commercial GIS (Geographic Information System) software. Compared with traditional GIS products, Map Calculus is based on the Lambda Calculus and Functional Programming (Haklay 2004) and therefore the computation operates only at the end of the analysis. Investigating IDW implementation across these fundamentally different system designs provide a first step towards the development of Map Calculus.
